Here's what I think...
The West has dominated and influenced the world for centuries. Now, the world is pushing back. China will soon be the world’s largest economy. Southeast Asia is home to more than 650 million people, a lot of them young, tech savvy and ready to work. And India is the world’s fastest growing major economy. I believe my deep understanding of Asia and its rising power on the global stage can offer a fresh perspective to the Western media landscape.
I moved from Singapore to Bermuda over a year ago to create an international business program. Bermuda may be a spec in the Atlantic, but it’s a financial services powerhouse. The Breakdown with Toni Waterman breaks down complicated international business topics to make them accessible to the layperson, but also offers insight to those in the industry. Like Bermuda itself, the Breakdown team has few resources, but pushes out an action packed, well produced, network quality show every week through sheer determination, innovation and grit.
The show has covered a broad range of topics, including blockchain, cryptos, insurance linked securities, trade and cannabis.
Prior to Bermuda, I worked at Channel NewsAsia in Singapore for 5 years. CNA is an English language Asian TV channel beaming into more than 50 million households in more than 25 countries.
As the primetime business anchor and senior reporter, I traveled extensively throughout Asia reporting on the intersection of global economics, politics, culture and technology. I’ve been in the eye of garment factory protests in Cambodia, where workers fighting for better wages threatened the bottom lines of household brands like H&M and Levi’s. I’ve been in the trenches of Jakarta’s developing subway system, which if left uncompleted, would grind Southeast Asia’s largest economy to a halt. I’ve been in the thicket of Malaysia’s palm oil industry, which is pushing many species to the brink of extinction, but is a pillar of the country’s economy.
My interest, though, goes well beyond business. I played a key role in CNA’s coverage of Brexit and the US presidential election. Coverage on both these days was dominated by breaking news and analysis, during which I was able to seamlessly weave together economics and politics.
The day after Brexit I secured an exclusive TV interview with the British High Commissioner in Singapore to talk about the economic and political fallout. Post-US election, I secured an interview with Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe to flesh out the long term impact of protectionism.
I am passionate about international news and helping people understand the world around them by making an event 10-thousand miles away, relevant.
